Past story:

Vester was born as the only child to the wealthy Carlowitz Household inside the borders of the Wall Rose, close to Wall Sina. Vester didn’t know much about his father, solely the fact that he ran away from his family when he was at the age of 3 while stealing a portion of assets the family possessed . On the other hand his mother was a disciplinary woman who devoted herself to her job as the rightful successor of the Carlowitz Inc , eventually raising the inclusive to number 1 in the food industry within the walls for a period of time until the arrival .

Besides his mother’s influence, which was not that much because she left his care to nannies and worked all day, his grandfather Paul Carlowitz had played a huge role as a mentor for Vester. Being homeschooled by him all along, Vester learned a lot from him and looked forward to spend most of his time with his grandfather during his childhood. Their bond eventually loosened when Vester’s interest grew more shallow. They could not understand each other at all, only their interest in literature could be discussed between them without creating a dissidence.

Due to old age and weakened immunity, Paul Carlowitz’s life had chained to bed. In-between that period of time, he called his grandchild beside him, and told his unspoken wish for him that he should get a job and become a soldier in the military. Vester refused this offer very harshly.
A day later the news of Collosal Titan’s attack has arrived and Carlowtiz Inc was financially shaken down by this crisis. That day, Paul Carlowitz donated whatever he owned to the military and requested his daughter to give food supplies free to those who needed.

Seeing that everyone around him vanished as his family broke, Vester found himself left all alone with no friend, and staying at home began to bother him even more, so he strolled the streets. There, he witnessed the homeless with no peace, he saw children not playing. He eventually met them, and unknowingly befriended the people of Wall Maria. As he began to spend each of his days on the streets, he wrote down the stories he had heard to a journal. He provided help for them, offered to share his home with them and found himself trying to convince his mother to give food to people who needed, much like his grandfather. One night when he was very drunk, he broke down to tears and found himself filling up an application form to the military and woke up the maid solely to say her to send the letter tomorrow. He didn’t remember what he did until he got a response from the military that he was accepted. His grandfather was very proud.

Honestly, he had never been a hard working soldier, and often was punished to run laps just for his attitudes. He couldn’t make it in top 10, of course, but it was not really a bother. He was actually very fond of the idea that he was going to be the keeper of Wall Rose’s citizens, and the guests from Wall Maria he grew to care about. He was going to join to the Stationary Guards.

Reason: To protect Wall Rose and its residents.

Task 2

The door was politely knocked twice.

Just when it was getting interesting Vester groaned mentally. At a time like this, when he had his hands on the book he was striving to obtain for god knew how long. Three months? Maybe four. There hadn’t been a second hand book sellers he did not leave off tired and bored of this young gentleman, passing by their stores everyday, solely to search for books that were written way before the Titans attacked. Even if they did have one of those books, they would probably keep the books to themselves, unless they were offered a strong deal, just like Vester did. What they could offer to him was only apologies.

Many of the books which survived the cataclysm were kept hidden inside the royal archieves of the Royal Palace, so it was a pain in the neck to get your hands on even one of them. So far, Vester could only make a collection of 4 books from the old world, which he loved to read again and again. One of them was of a culture which is thought to go extinct, which he had luck to have from the wisest and kindest librarian Vester ever met. He was a family friend. One day when the poor man got very sick, he donated all the books he had to the public library, except for one. It was an epic account of Japanese literature, and even though Vester couldn’t read a thing on it, the pictures that were drawn made it up for it more than just enough. It was the art of another culture far beyond the mountains behind the Walls. The clothes, the faces, the armors, the buildings in the pictures and how they were painted and inked with delicacy… They were truly breathtaking. It was sad that they were left alone abandoned as the children of a dead nation.

Here was written the Tale of the Heike, and It tells the struggle between the Taira and Minamoto clans for the control of Japan in Genpei War.

Vester could remember the old man explaining all the pages to the teenager before him one by one.

May he rest in peace.

The second book was the famous Persian polymath Avicenna’s Book of Healing. The Carlowitz family had the fortune of obtaining it long before Vester was born. It was a truly fascinating encyclopedia on philosophy and science, and fortunately it was a translated copy due to the fact that the Europeans were once very keen on Islamic culture during Islam’s Golden Age. Vester could remember trying to make his own discoveries under the light of this book when he was just a child.

The third book was of a great journey, the Book of the Marvels in the World, It was co-written by the great traveler Marco Polo and Rustichello da Pisa. It was not the complete travelogue though, as his grandfather said, but still, it was another valuable resource for the outer the cultures, and the landscaped of Middle East, and Asia.

This is it Sylvestre, when the humankind succeeds in the quest of defeating Titans, I and you will settle down somewhere closeby to Ren and take off the travel the world just like Mister Polo did!

He remembered his grandfather telling him cheerfully, while they were reading it together just like any other time.

Vester put Homer’s Iliad to the side as he pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Make it quick,” he commended and the door behind the sofa creaked, then slowly opened.

“My lord, Mr Carlowitz wishes to speak to you tomorrow morning,” his butler said.

Vester chuckled a little as he realized the coincidence.

“Inform him that I will be there tomarrow,” he commented.

It had been a month since he made a visit to his grandfather. Maybe bringing his newest treasure to him would melt some ice between the two.
